PEI Human Rights Commisison believes education is key to eliminating barriers and preventing discrimination from happening.

Join Tom Hilton, Education officer, as he discuss the following topics:

♦ Review of the Human Rights Act and work of the Human Rights Commission

♦ The difference between Discrimination & Harassment

♦ Review of the Supreme Court of Canada’s 3-part Moore test for discrimination

♦ Applying the Moore test to case-studies and answering this question: Could this be unlawful discrimination, harassment, both or neither?

♦ Review of the Duty to Accommodate to the Point of Undue Hardship


Facilitator - Tom Hilton, Education Officer at PEI Human Rights Commission

Tom Hilton, a native of Charlottetown, holds a BA from Bowdoin College (Brunswick, ME) and Master of Education from UPEI. In May 2014, he received the Governor-General Gold Medal Award for his Master's thesis 'Schooling and the Practices of Freedom of 'Out' Queer Youth on Prince Edward Island'.

Tom has worked at the Commission on public education outreach projects since 2011 and as the Education Officer since April 2019. Tom collaborates with diverse groups such as the PEI Connectors program, Mi'kmaq Confederacy of PEI, UPEI Faculty of Education, Department of Education and Lifelong Learning, PEITF, PEERS Alliance and PEI Transgender Network. Tom especially enjoys talking with students in Intermediate and High School as their ‘matter of fact’ respect for human diversity increases his confidence for our future.
